Historical Village & Welcome Center News

By Kathy Dirks, Coordinator

Congratulations to Kathy for being named 2007 Employee of the Year by the Missouri Valley Chamber of Commerce!

Visitors Boost Iowa's Economy

The Harrison County Historical Village & Welcome Center is one of 20 Iowa Welcome Centers located throughout Iowa.  To determine trip characteristics of visitors stopping at the centers, each place has the opportunity to ask every 46th travel party to complete a survey. The results of the surveys conducted at the Harrison County Welcome Center may be surprising.

The estimated economic impact of visitors stopping here to the state of Iowa in 2007 was $5.4 million dollars!  Travel party spending per day on lodging, entertainment, transportation, food, and shopping was $208.16 per day.  The average travel party size was 2.2 with the average travel party spending five days in Iowa.  Of the travelers that stopped at the Harrison County Welcome Center, 31.6% extended their stay in Iowa because of information they received when they stopped. The top areas of interest of those stopping were general sightseeing (68%), historical areas (48%), visiting friends and family (40%), scenic byways (24%), and camping/outdoors (16%).  To view the complete results for the center as well as a summary of all surveyed centers, please visit www.traveliowa.com/travelindustry/welcome_centers.html.

Just a little reminder that May is the time of year that we hold our spring school program and that the village will be closed to the general public the following days: Tuesday – Friday, April 29 – May 2; Tuesday – Friday, May 6 – 9; and Wednesday and Thursday, May 14 – 15. Thus far we have 13 schools with approximately 725 students registered to participate.  We can ALWAYS use more volunteers so please give me a call if you would be interested in helping.

Have a great Spring and Summer!
