"If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”                                                                          -Rachel Carson

Environmental Education Mission

The Harrison County Conservation Board’s Environmental Education program sets forth the following goals:

  • To provide programs which interpret local natural resources including plants, animals and physical elements
  • To promote the conservation and/or preservation of those resources
  • To promote practices which insure a cleaner, safer and healthier environment
  • To develop an environmentally responsible citizenry in Harrison County

Environmental Education in Schools

The Naturalist visits schools in Harrison County every month providing a wide range of environmental education programs. These programs are designed to support curriculum and provide hands-on activities.  Programs are also offered for home school groups. Educators can click here for Natural Connections—Environmental Education Planning Guide. (.pdf)

Public Programs

Interesting programs about nature are offered to the public to promote the understanding of our natural world. Some programs offered include night hikes, birdwatching, Nature Tots, outdoor cooking, and about wildlife in Harrison County.

Summer Nature Camps

Many children attend summer nature camps at Willow Lake every year. Especially for those children with an interest in the outdoors, these camps provide hands-on learning and fun.
