Harrison County Conservation Board Meetings
The Harrison County Conservation Board meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm, at Willow Lake Headquarters Building, 2725 Easton Trail, Woodbine, Iowa. The meetings are open to the public and visitors are welcome.

April

Spring is here - parks open April 1st

Nature Tots: In a Small, Small Pond
Monday, April 21st, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

Nature Tots is for ages 3, 4, or 5 years old and an adult. For this program we will learn about animals that live around a pond. We’ll read a book, get to see and touch some of these animals, and make a craft. Snack provided. There is no cost or registration.  Older siblings may attend program, but only tots will be able to participate. Program will be held in the Nature Encounter Center.

Arbor Day Open House
Saturday, April 26th, 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

Bring the family out for our annual open house at Willow Lake.  Receive free trees to plant in your yard, see displays in the Nature Encounter Center, and meet the staff and conservation board.  There will be information on the Emerald Ash Borer, an exotic insect that is threatening Iowa’s ash trees, and what you can do to help the fight. Kids will also see amphibians and reptiles and be able to make a craft to take home! No cost; no registration.


May

Hunting Morel Mushrooms
Thursday May 1st, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

Have you ever gone looking for morel mushrooms only to come back empty handed while your neighbor finds a whole bag full?  Come out to Willow Lake to learn the best places to look for mushrooms and how to identify true morels.  We’ll hike the woodlands and participants can keep what morels they find to take home.  Meet at the shower house in the campground. There is no cost or registration.  Dress for the weather and for hiking.  Program cancelled if severe weather.  No cost; no registration.

May 10th is International Migratory Bird Day

June

Kids' Fishing Day
Saturday, June 7th 9:00 -11:00 p.m.
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

The Woodbine Kiwanis and Harrison County Conservation will host the annual Kids’ Fishing Day at Willow Lake.  Bring your fishing pole, bait, and a little luck and see if you catch the big one! Try your skill in the casting contest.  Whether you catch a fish or not everyone will get prizes!  There will also be a fish cleaning station to demonstrate how to filet fish and get yours ready to take home!  This event is held rain or shine!  Sign up sheets will be in local schools or call HCCB for more information.

Pisgah Play Days
Saturday, June 28th, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Pisgah City Park, Pisgah

Bring the family to enjoy Pisgah Days!  Harrison County Conservation will have a booth with live animals and fun things for the kids.  Learn more about park and wildlife areas in Harrison County!


July

Harrison County Conservation Board office

Harrison County Conservation Fair Booth
Saturday, July 26th, noon-5:00 p.m.
Fairgrounds, Missouri Valley

Stop by to visit us at the 150th Harrison County Fair!  We’ll have our booth set up in Groom’s Hall with live animals and stuff for the kids!  Bring the family and learn more about fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, and outdoor recreation in Harrison County


August

Caught On Camera!
Saturday, August 9th, 9:00-10:00 p.m.
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

Harrison County Conservation has set up a trail camera at different locations to catch animals when no one is around! Bring the family to see pictures of all these different animals.  Here’s a hint—there’s some with spots, some with stripes, and winged creatures.  This is not a program to miss!  Come a little early to roast marshmallows and make s’mores!  Meet at the large shelter in the campground.  If severe weather, program will be held in the Nature Encounter Center.

Hunter Safety Class
August 21st and 23rd
Willow Lake Recreation Area, Woodbine

Harrison County Conservation will host a hunter safety class on Thursday, August 21st from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 23rd from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  Anyone born after January 1st, 1972, must complete a hunter safety class to hunt in Iowa.  Participants must be 12 years old and attend both classes to receive certification.  Registration will only be accepted beginning July 7th and space is limited.  Call HCCB at 712-647-2785 to register or for more information.

Harrison County Conservation Board sponsors two hunter safety classes a year in March and August. Can’t get to one of our classes?

Missouri Valley Kids Fest
Saturday, September 13th, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Missouri Valley City Park, Missouri Valley

Harrison County Conservation will have a booth at Kids Fest!  Stop by to see live animals like turtles, frogs, and snakes.  There will also be information about outdoor recreation opportunities in Harrison County.  Bring the family and have some fun!
